ADRIAN MOLE SERIES

The series was first broadcast in 1985. You can see the first chapter here. The opening and closing theme was "Profoundly In Love With Pandora" by Ian Dury. It was released as a single in October 1985 and reached number 45 on the UK SINGLES CHART. I include the lyrics below.

"My mother's heart and soul
Have gone halfway up the pole
My father's on the dole
This is taking its toll
My friend Bert is much too old
And his dog's beyond control
Though it sometimes seems they're droll
It's a nuisance on the whole.

I'm profoundly in love with Pandora
My poem has an intellectual theme
The tenderness with which I adore her
Goes all bouncy in my dreams.

Yesterday my chin was clear
Now a new spot has appeared
Barry Kent had cost me dear
Till my Grandma interfered
The BBC know I'm sincere
In making writing my career
Wish my mum would come back here
Lots of ups and downs this year.

I'm profoundly in love with Pandora
She's got knee-socks and treacle-coloured hair
The tenderness with which I adore her
Is something fine and rare.

But, my father's in a mess
And there's a great deal of stress
At our house
And my major concern
Is that things might return
To normal
So get rid of that creep
And come back to sleep
In our house
We both miss you mum
So hurry up and come
Back

My mother's heart and soul
Have gone halfway up the pole
Though it sometimes seems they're droll
It's a nuisance on the whole

Yesterday my chin was clear
Now a new spot has appeared
Profoundly in love with Pandora

Wish my mum would come back here
Lots of ups and downs this year

I'm profoundly in love with Pandora
Things aren't always what they seem
The tenderness with which I adore her
Is indeed a love supreme."

I believe the song can be considered as the perfect the summary of the book.

For me, this song can be divided in three different parts:

-Firstly, the song talks about the problems of Adrian´s family and friends: his father is on the dole and he is stressed out because he can’t find any job, his mother leaves home and she starts a relationship with Mr. Lucas (the neighbor) but she only wants to be free; in addition, Adrian looks after a Bert in order not to go to his maths lessons, but at the very beginning Bert has bad manners with Adrian and he has a crazy dog.

-Secondly, the poem talks about Adrian´s personal problems: he has spots in his chin and he is worried about them, also, Barry Kent bribes Adrian to get his food and money but Adrian´s grandmother helps him and Barry stops doing it. On the other hand, he misses his mum and he wants her mum to come back home because living without his mother is a mess.

-Finally the song talks about love. The first day after his Christmas holiday a new girl came to his school, when Adrian saw Pandora for the first time he fell in love with her.

2)Are/were you disappointed by the way the characters are portrayed in the series? Did you expect them to look different?

I´m disappointed with the video because the series was filmed in the 80´s and it was a very different time from now. People wore different clothes, different hairstyles…, in addition, they had another life habits.

I imagined that Adrian was more handsome and Pandora too. I´m disappointed with Adrian ´s father because I imagined him like a more irresponsible and crazy person.
Also, I´m disappointed with Adrian´s grandmother because I imagined her younger than she actually is, because I don´t know any grandparents like her.

In my opinion the lyrics of the song are a summary of the book. Why? Because they make reference to all the problems in Adrian’s life. It deals with issues such as love, bullying, family problems, his intelligence, teenagers’ problems, …

In the book, love is portrayed in different ways. We can see Adrian’s love to Pandora in verses such as “I’m profoundly in love with Pandora”. The song repeats this verse many times, maybe because it wants to stand out the fact that Adrian is madly in love with Pandora. However all isn’t not everything is “adolescent love”, there are other kinds of loves; such as truelove between adults (like Adrian’s parents) or elderly people (like Bert Baxter). And very important, family love, although this family isn’t a very close family.

Spots are one of Adrian’s main problems. It’s related with the love so, if Adrian wants t Pandora to fancy him he has to be handsome, and for him, someone who has a spot isn’t handsome. But that teenager problem is not the only one. The bullying is reflected in a single verse, “Barry Kent had cost my dear”. Perhaps, the song doesn’t pay enough attention to this problem because it isn’t one of Adrian’s major problems.

Another problem for Adrian is his family. The song shows the problems within his family in verses such as: “My father’s on the dole”, “My mother's heart and soul have gone halfway up the pole”. Adrian’s parents usually have an argument, the dog is unpleasant, his house is a mess, Just Adrian’s luck.

In short, I think that the song could well be a good summary of the book, it includes the most important matters, such as love, family and teenager problems.

    2. Are/were you disappointed by the way the characters are portrayed in the series? Did you expect them to look different?

Yes, I´m disappointed with the characters. I know that it was another time so, there were different clothes, customs , hairstyles, taste … but, in my opinion, there a big difference between the book and the series, in the characters’ physical appearance:

    • Adrian Mole: I expected him to be more handsome and I didn’t expect him so studious.
    • Pandora: like Adrian, I expected her to be prettier.

But I am not disappointed with:

    • Mr. Lucas: Just pictured him the way he looks
    • Adrian’s grandma: she cares for his family like in the book.

  3. Correction: I think this song is exactly like a summary of the book.

In the first verse, the song talks about the situation of Adrian's parents, his father is on the dole, and his mother is confused about her fellings. It is about his friend Bert and his dog. He is a little bit fed up with them, but they are quite funny.

The second verse is the chorus, and it's about Pandora, Adrian is in love with her, and he thkins that he is an intellectual.

The third verse is about Adrian with his problems about his spots, he keeps talking about Barry Kent, and he mentions the poems that he sends to the BBC.

The fourth verse is another chorus, and he keeps talking about
Pandora, he describes her hair, and finds little details in it.

In the fifth verse he talks about his parents again. His father is a mess, and Adrian is so stressful. He is worried about his mother, beacause she left with Mr. Lucas, her neighbor. He hopes his mother returns someday.

    - I think so, because someone who hasn't read the book, could understand it by reading the lyricsIn the song you can see what the book is about: Adrian talks about the problems with his parents ("My father's on the dole/ We both miss you mum, So hurry up and come…"), Bert Baxter ("My friend Bert is much too old, And his dog's beyond control…"), his love for Pandora ("The tenderness with which I adore her, Is indeed a love supreme…")and his problems with the spots, the BBC and Barry Kent ("Yesterday my chin was clear, Now a new spot has appeared, Barry Kent had cost me dear, Till my Grandma interfered, The BBC know I'm sincere).

2.Are/were you disappointed by the way the characters are portrayed in the series? Did you expect them to look different?
    - Yes, I'm. On the one hand, I expected Adrian to be more handsome ahd I thought Pandora would be prettier. Moreover, I imagined a younger Pauline an d a different Nigel (not so thin). On the other hand, the grandmother, the father and Bert Baxter have a physical appearance in line with what I thought.
